General Women's Health Q & A

What is a well-woman visit?

A well-woman visit is a yearly consultation and exam with your doctor at Women’s Health Consulting IL. During the visit, you and your doctor discuss your medical history, menstrual cycles, lifestyle, and any changes to your health since your last visit, if relevant.  Your visit can include an internal and external pelvic exam and Pap smear if you’re sexually active or over the age of 21.

A well-woman visit provides the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you have about your health, fertility, birth control, or lifestyle. Your doctor at Women’s Health Consulting IL takes the time to understand your intimate needs fully so you can get the care you need.

Your doctor always works to develop a personal relationship with you in order to understand and respect your medical needs and preferences, especially if you’re uncomfortable visiting a gynecologist or having certain procedures performed.

When should I see a gynecologist?

Girls can begin seeing a gynecologist at the age of 13 to learn about their menstrual cycles, reproductive health, and develop good health habits. Most women begin getting pelvic exams and Pap smears between the ages of 18-21, based on guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Your doctor may recommend these procedures sooner if you’re sexually active.

The team at Women’s Health Consulting IL recommends that you continue your visits throughout adulthood and into menopause because you’re at an increased risk of certain conditions as you age, like osteoporosis.

Your doctor provides all appropriate disease screenings based on your risk factors — like a history of smoking or a first-degree relative with breast cancer — and can make referrals for advanced testing or treatment when necessary.
