WHC Introduces Innovative Fibroid Treatment to Northwestern Medicine

Acessa to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are benign growths that occur in the uterus. By the age of 50, up to 80% of women will have fibroids. They range in size, quantity, and location. Fibroid tissue on its own can be harmless, but for some of us, fibroids can cause severe discomfort and take a toll on our daily lives.

Good news: there are options.

The Acessa procedure was designed to maintain the integrity of the uterus by focusing treatment solely on the fibroid (vs. cutting into the uterus or removing it completely) and more importantly to relieve symptoms caused by fibroids.

This is done by applying controlled heat directly into the fibroid, which in turn destroys the fibroid tissue and causes it to shrink over time (imagine the consistency of a hard baseball changing to a soft marshmallow). The smaller and softer destroyed fibroid tissue leads to symptom relief, without having to perform major surgery on your uterus.

Dr. McDonald is pleased and honored to be spearheading the introduction of this procedure to the Northwestern Community. If you have symptomatic fibroids that are not relieved by lifestyle and medication options, but major surgery is not for you, call WHC at 312-263-5517 and schedule a telemedicine consultation with Dr. Wendy McDonald. Find out if you are a candidate for this minimally invasive, life-changing procedure that can have you back in full swing in 1-2 weeks.
